Uttar Pradesh has the largest State Assembly in India with 403 seats. Here is how the majority mark of 202 works, how seats are distributed, and what the 2022 result looked like.
The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) has 403 elected seats — the largest State Assembly in India. To form the government, a party or pre-poll alliance needs a simple majority: more than half of 403, which is 202 seats.
If no party or alliance reaches 202 seats, the result is a hung Assembly and parties negotiate support after the results, as provided by the Constitution.

In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 255 seats and formed the government for a second consecutive term. The Samajwadi Party won 111 seats, the Bahujan Samaj Party 1 seat and the Congress 2 seats, with the remaining seats going to smaller parties and allies. These are the 2022 results — the 2027 result has not been declared and no seat count exists yet.
Uttar Pradesh sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha, more than any other state, and its Assembly election is the largest state election in India by number of voters — over 15 crore electors. The result is watched as a bellwether for national politics, but the 2027 outcome will only be known after counting, on the date the ECI announces.
